New Zealand to Ban Smoking
I dont smoke any more but this is a step too far IMO and another erosion of freedoms, wont be long before these do good health types get certain foods banned, Alcohol is on the hit list i bet, how about heading in football, and sports like boxing banned altogether, even Rugby could be targeted.

What an awful world we are seeing develop.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/dec/09/new-zealand-to-ban-smoking-for-next-generation-in-bid-to-outlaw-habit-by-2025

New Zealand has announced it will outlaw smoking for the next generation, so that those who are aged 14 and under today will never be legally able to buy tobacco.

New legislation means the legal smoking age will increase every year, to create a smoke-free generation of New Zealanders, associate health minister Dr Ayesha Verrall said on Thursday.

Mental. In ten years time it will be legal for a 25 year old to buy fags, but not a 24 year old. Back door ID cards. Typical left-wing government.

Re: New Zealand to Ban Smoking
If they were invented today and the damage they do was known. Right away, they’d be banned in most countries of the world and like drugs most people would agree with the ban even many of those that disagree with New Zealand’s actions now.

So I’m not really sure what the fuss is. In fact other governments should be asked why they put tobacco companies above the health of their people

On a similar note, if paracetamol was invented today, it would almost certainly not be given a license due to the possibility of liver failure from overdose. A very unpleasant way to go.

Funny old world.

In 20 years time I’d like to think that social media will be seen in a similar in terms of mental health

I have no issue with the Kiwis, but they can reap what they have sown - they voted for the hideous Dobbin after all

Pretty sure they wouldn’t not give a licence because of what happens if you overdose otherwise very few drugs would be on the market.

Thing is it's a lot easier to fatally overdose on paracetamol, than it would be with recently licensed drugs.

I've seen cases where people have taken 100s of times the recommended dose of some drugs, and have recovered without issues.

It would take much less paracetamol to be fatal!

On that rationale, alcohol would be banned too. I guess anything with added sugars too.

Bizarre how some people (especially the leftys) are all progressive on illicit drug reform and want to decriminalize some drugs and then completely fine with prohibition on tobacco?

Dandy Lyon 10:55 Thu Dec 9
Re: New Zealand to Ban Smoking
Thought someone might come back with that. You might be right, but the way I see it, smoking has zero benefit and a lot of damage. Alcohol on the other hand can be good for you in moderation and is only damaging when it’s abused

cheesebgt 11:24 Thu Dec 9
Re: New Zealand to Ban Smoking
Alcohol is rarely drunk within the recommended safe limits. I think it's 3 units a day (one pint) and you can't combine days as that's binge drinking which is worse.

I noted you didn't reply to the added sugar. Obesity and its effects is the largest drain on the NHS.

Re: New Zealand to Ban Smoking
I see an outright ban on cigarette smoking as providing an opportunity for criminality and I cannot understand how a government fails to see this.

As it is the Kiwis efforts to discourage and minimise smoking has been proved effective with only a small percentage of their population being regular smokers.

We all know that if you smoke you’re a mug but as long as you do it in a way that does not affect non smokers so what.

What has prohibition ever achieved though?

A noble gesture and one I agree with, the fact is 50% of people who are smokers die from an illness related to their smoking.

Thats a horrible stat.

So?

Nobody is forced to smoke. They know the risks. If they enjoy smoking, good luck to them. The taxes paid by smokers, tobacco companies, etc, more than covers the cost of treating smoking related illnesses.

Rather like people who take part in high risk sports. They know the risks , but still take part.

Never been a smoker and the ban on smoking in pubs, and restaurants, is an excellent piece of legislation.
